Organizing a large-scale event is always an adventure, especially when unpredictable Alberta weather forces a last-minute venue change. This year, the team made a smart call to move CFC Family Day from the mountains to North Glenmore Park in Calgary. The city welcomed us with perfect sunshine, making it an unforgettable, warm family day.
For Rezin Media, this was an exhilarating 8-hour documentary photography marathon. My goal was simple yet intense: capture the heartbeat of the event, ensuring no genuine emotion went unnoticed.
Arriving early at the Raven Picnic Site while the park was still quiet allowed me to capture the setup. From the first grills being fired up for the salmon soup to the assembly of the massive kids' maze, volleyball nets, and badminton courts—these behind-the-scenes moments are the foundation of the club's story.
As over 200 guests arrived, the venue came alive. Managing a crowd this size required constant movement and quick lens changes. A wide-angle lens captured the sheer scale of the activities and the bustling kitchen, while a telephoto lens allowed me to shoot candid emotions from a distance—kids laughing mid-game, families sharing stories on picnic blankets, and intense moments on the volleyball court.
Behind the Lens: The CFC Family Story
The ultimate test of the day was organizing the massive group shot with over 200 people. It required precise planning: calculating the sun's angle so no one was squinting, selecting a clean background, and managing the camera settings for a fast burst. While the adults co-operated instantly, keeping the attention of dozens of energetic kids at the exact same second was a challenge—but patience and a fast shutter speed delivered the perfect shot of the CFC Family.
The rest of the day flew by with official awards, intense sports matches, and casual family portraits. Taking short breaks from pure reportage to photograph couples and families in a relaxed, natural environment resulted in some beautifully authentic portraits.
Eight hours on my feet passed in a flash. Despite the physical fatigue, the incredible positive energy from the club made it entirely worth it.
